Assignment 1 Datawrapper
A)
Short description:
I wanted the visualisation to be clean and easy for the reader to understand. I placed “number of reactors” on the y-axis and “years” on the x-axis because I found it easier to read the chart in this way. Also I aimed for a title that summarised the meaning of the chart.
B)
Short description: This is a bar chart over “Top 8 countries with number of reactors” and is sorted from highest to lowest. The chart is user-friendly and encourage the user to hover over the map to see each county’s amount of reactors. I also added a description of the x-axis and the y-axis under the chart.
C)
- Have you followed the checklist for visualizations (every step)? Yes, I have followed the checklist.
- Colours: How easy or difficult is changing colours using the tool? I would say that it is quite easy to change colours in Datawrapper once you know where the settings are. Datawrapper is user-friendly with its preset color palettes and customization options for the different elements.
- Text/Labels: How easy or difficult is it to work with text and labels in the tool? It is a great tool! You can add and customize them to explain things the chart alone can’t show. It’s a great way to give more context to the charts.
- Flexibility: How flexible are the tools? Can you make the changes you need? I feel that I can make the changes I need and that they are easy to use. I can easily customize charts, colors, labels, and text to fit my needs.
- Accessibility: What are the different accessibility options provided by the tools? Datawrapper offers accessibility options like support for screen readers, colorblind-friendly colors and options to adjust text for better readability.
- Smartphone: How do the charts appear on your smartphone? Have you faced any issues while accessing them? Both charts are interactive on my smartphone and fits in well in the article. It is shown in a suitable scale on the screen and is easy to read and follow. I haven’t faced any issues accessing them.
Assignment 2 Flourish
A)
Short description: I placed “number of reactors” on the y-axis and “years” on the x-axis because I found it easier to read the chart in this way. Also I aimed for a title that summarised the meaning of the chart. The chart is interactive and easy for the reader to use.

Short description: This is a bar chart over “Top 8 countries with number of reactors”. As well as the bar chart made in Datawrapper, this bar chart is user-friendly and encourage the user to hover over the map to see each county’s amount of reactors.

- Colours: How easy or difficult is changing colours using the tool? I would say that is was a bit harder to find the tool for changing the color in Flourish than in Datawrapper. But once I found them, I could use preset themes or choose custom colors for different chart elements.
- Text/Labels: How easy or difficult is it to work with text and labels in the tool? In my opinion, Flourish is a bit tricky to navigate in regarding changing text and labels compared to Datawrapper. But once I figured it out, less and less problems appeared. Now I can easily add, edit, and customize the text and all the labels better.
- Flexibility: How flexible are the tools? Can you make the changes you need? I think the tools are flexible and easy to use in Flourish and I can easy make the changes I need.
- Accessibility: What are the different accessibility options provided by the tools? Flourish provides accessibility options like screen reader support, colorblind-friendly palettes, keyboard navigation, and customizable text descriptions.
- Smartphone: How do the charts appear on your smartphone? Have you faced any issues while accessing them? I would say that the charts in Flourish looks more professional than the Datawrapper-charts. It is easy to follow and the design is nice. The charts are interactive and easy to navigate in. I haven’t faced any issues accessing them.
Assignment 3
- In what context do you think Datawrapper is the best tool, and why? When would you not use it? When it comes to line charts and bar charts, I like Datawrapper more since it is easier and faster to design in. Datawrapper is better then I need a chart to be done quickly, for example while working in a newsroom. The visualisations look professional and demands minimal effort. I wouldn’t use it for highly interactive or complex visualizations, Flourish is better then.
- What are the main benefits of using Datawrapper? Datawrapper is easy, quick and gives you professional charts. It is especially useful for journalists and data-projects since its simple and very easy to add data to. Datawrapper is easier and faster to navigate in than in Flourish.
- In what context do you think Flourish is the best tool, and why? When would you not use it? Flourish is best when it comes to creating interactive visualizations and animations. I also think Flourish is the best tool for creating maps since it is very user-friendly. The maps in Flourish are more aesthetically pleasing than the map-charts in Datawrapper. I would not use Flourish for simple charts when the job needs to be published quickly.
- What are the main benefits of using Flourish? In my opinion, all map-charts in Flourish are more aesthetic and more user-friendly for the audience than the map-charts in Datawrapper. The program is more creative and allows me to do more specific changes. Also, the charts in Flourish are better when it comes to websites where audience interaction is key.
- Which of the tools do you personally prefer so far? I prefer Datawrapper more, since it is less time consuming and therefor works better when producing “fast news” in a newsroom.
