More Than Gifts: How Gothenburg’s Christmas Tram Highlights a Deeper Crisis
By Shinjini Chatterjee
A century-old tradition in Gothenburg, the Julklappsvagnen (Christmas Tram), rolled through the city on December 7, 2024, collecting gifts for underprivileged children and families. This annual event, organized by the Göteborgs Stadsmission (Gothenburg City Mission) and Spårvagnssällskapet Ringlinien (The tramway society Ringlinien), brings the community together in a shared act of kindness.
However, beyond the warmth of mulled wine and festive music, this initiative highlights a persistent issue of Gothenburg’s deep socioeconomic divide.
A Celebration with a Purpose
Each year, residents eagerly gather at tram stops to donate Christmas presents, ensuring that children from low-income households do not go without gifts during the festive season. In 2024,Drottningtorget, the tram’s main collection point, donors enjoyed holiday cheer with performances, warm beverages, and activities for children, including a Lucia choir performance from the balcony of Hotel Eggers.

As part of the initiative, Göteborgs Stadsmission curated a wishlist for poor children, focusing primarily on gift cards for essential goods such as groceries, children’s and youth clothing, sporting equipment, and toys.
Although the exact number of donations was not recorded, the response was overwhelming. “We didn’t really count the amount, but we received hundreds of gifts—much more than in previous years,” said Louise Benzow, marketing communicator at Stadsmission. “What is remarkable is how many children came forward to donate for other kids.”
The collection remained open until December 19,2024 ,ensuring that all families in need received support, through drop offs at Stadsmission’s second-hand stores across the city.
A Deeper Issue : Gothenburg’s Poverty Divide
While the Christmas tram embodies the spirit of generosity, it also highlights the persistent socio-economic divide in Gothenburg. According to Goteborgs Stad’s 2022 Data, areas like Eriksbo, Hammarkullen, and Norra Biskopsgården report some of the highest unemployment rates and proportions of children living in low-income households ,exceeding 25% in some cases.
Göteborgs Stadsmission’s 2024 Poverty Report further underscores the issue, revealing a rise in requests for food aid, housing support, and emergency financial assistance which indicate the growing economic hardship.
As Gothenburg continues to evolve, the persistence of poverty remains a challenge. While the Julklappsvagnen brings warmth and hope during the holiday season, its true significance lies in drawing attention to the city’s deeper inequalities.
