By analysing over 2,300 news headlines, the authors find gender biases in language that sensationalize women’s experiences as compared to other topics. The authors queried RapidAPI for headlines using gendered language to analyse major publications in the US, the UK, South Africa and India.
I believe it is a good example of data journalism as the story is grounded in the dataset and by using visualisations such as bar charts, sentence examples and animations demonstrates the difference used for men and women in headlines (comparative approach) – bringing to light a niche under-explored issue in the media. Despite gathering a rigorous dataset, the visualisations are simplified for the sake of reader’s comfort while being transparent in methodology and the gathered sources. This style of communication allows readers to quickly see trends without needing a technical background to interpret raw data. The interactivity gives users a hands-on way to explore the findings, making the story more engaging and personalized. To analyse the words NLP packages for Python were used.
