Palchyk – Christmas Tree Flight Disappointment in Gothenburg

Niether Jas 39 Gripens, nor later flying TP 84 Herculeses could be seen because of low clouds

Fighter jets in the formation of a Christmas tree have flown over Gothenburg on Wednesday, 11th of December. The “Julgransflygningar” with Swedish fighter jets Jas 39 Gripen was over the city at 13:45. However, because of low and dense clouds, the “Julgransflygningar” was heard, but barely seen.

“Well, hopefully, we’ll see them next time” – said a young man in the crowd at the Skansen Kronan viewpoint.

That hope didn’t come true as later on Wednesday the Christmas greeting with four military aircrafts TP 84 Hercules flew over Gothenburg again loud but not seen.

Christmas greetings from the Air Force were expected to fly over Gothenburg on Tuesday, the 10th, but the flight was cancelled due to weather conditions – it was cloudy as well.

“Julgransflygningar” is a yearly tradition of the Swedish Air Force. This year Sweden holds the first Christmas tree flight as a NATO member. To mark this, Norway’s, Denmark’s and Finland’s Air Forces cooperated with Sweden for Julgransflygningar to show unity. Norway joined Christmas flights with their F-35 over Southern Norway and Western Sweden, while Sweden’s Gripen together with Finland’s F-18 Hornets flew over Northern Finland and Northern Sweden, Denmark’s F-16 has joined Sweden’s Gripen formation flying over Southern Sweden and Copenhagen.
